I’ve been struggling when it comes to this review, on how to write it so I don’t spoil it for people who have not seen it, but still provide a quality review for people who either want to see it, have seen or will be going to see it and offer my honest opinion on the movie which may or may not help you decide if you want to see this movie.
Let me start off by saying I will not be posting any spoilers for the movie, so if you are reading this in order to decide if you should spend your hard earned money to see this movie, then by all means read on. If you have seen Infinity War and want to read my opinion of the movie, then also read on. I hope this review details more of my thoughts about the movie and perhaps start a discussion about the movie. I do recommend seeing ‘Black Panther‘ before seeing ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ since part of the story won’t make sense.
‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ ends a 10 year saga that Marvel Studio’s started back in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie. Like most people, I’ve seen this movie a few times, both in the theatre, on DVD/Blu-Ray and on TV at various times over the last 10 years. Marvel listed their entire movie plan a few years ago when the first Avengers movie came out, detailing which movies were being released and in which order. The end of the first section of this list concludes with ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘, and begins with a 2nd Avengers movie (Infinity War part 2) which isn’t named yet. So now that we know a little bit of the history of the time-line we can get on with my thoughts on the movie.
I’m not going to lie, but I am a big fan of all the Marvel movies, with the exception of the 2nd Thor movie, which I have yet to finish watching more than 10 minutes of. I won’t get into any more detail on that. ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ starts you off right after ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ pretty much ended, and it continues on well from there. The beginning little bit of the movie is spent introducing all the characters again, catching the viewer up on where they are and how they are getting prepared for what is coming. It doesn’t take long to show what is coming and build up the story of Thanos. Thanos was first introduced back in the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie, but he had a very small part. He’s been pretty much in the background, you know he is there, but you don’t learn much about him. There is some good origin story for Thanos in the middle of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, which makes it brief, but still delivers enough to give you an idea of his motivations. A full Thanos origin story would have also been good, and I suppose could still be in the works. I couldn’t help feel a bit sorry for him. He is ruthless and driven in his cause, and he will never stop until his goal is complete.
‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is jammed packed with lots of action and special effects that you would expect from a Marvel movie, including the cameo from Stan Lee. I enjoyed how they brought all the different teams together, and it was good to see Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Black Widow, T’Chala, Iron Man, Spiderman, Thor, Dr. Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy all in the same movie. From a directors standpoint, it must have been difficult to get enough screen time for all the different parties to be able to tell a coherent story.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo did a great job of tying it all together. There is a decent amount of humor in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Ever since ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ Marvel has added a bit more humor into their movies. I found the humor was well timed and placed in good spots of the movie.
Overall I found ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ a well thought out movie and was very entertaining to watch. The ending will blow your mind, so be ready for it. There is 1 post credit trailer that you have to watch, as it foreshadows the next Avengers movie. I would highly recommend this movie if you are a fan of the marvel series of movies, and if you are still on the fence about them, but have seen all the others, then you have to see this movie in order to keep going with the story. I only suggest that you go to the bathroom before the movie, because you won’t want to miss any of it.
