Pax West 2016: Detached

Anshar Studios took to Pax West 2016 to show off their VR experience; Detached.

We stopped by their booth soon after PAX opened up that Friday morning to check it out. It was the first time I had ever tried 90 Frame-per-second VR on the Oculus Rift. How was it? Well, Let’s first talk about what exactly Detached is.

What is Detached?

Detached is a First Person PvP Experience, designed specifically for Virtual Reality headsets, focusing on rivalry, exploration and survival. The game features a single player and a multiplayer mode, both involving intense skill-based flying in an astronaut suit. The game is designed to be an intense VR experience (with acceleration in all directions in space), which means it is not intended for VR-sensitive players, but those who want a more extreme experience.

Main features

  • detached_upload_vr_2Intense Virtual Reality Experience – Designed from the ground up to support VR HMDs such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, the astronaut experience (freedom of movement in all directions) makes this game best suited for players looking for an intense gameplay. It is not intended for VR-sensitive players.
  • Player vs Player – In this mode the game requires you to exhibit skill and cunning, in order to outmaneuver and outwit your opponent in a new take on the capture-the-flag mode you know from shooter games.
  • Survival and exploration – Look for supplies like fuel or oxygen by exploring various environments, for example an abandoned science station or a derelict cruiser ship.
  • Simulation and arcade modes – Depending on your familiarity with VR and simulator games, you can choose an easier arcade experience or play the game like an astronaut.

detached-3What I played of the game was really great looking and the VR was incredibly immersive. The controls took me a little bit to get the hang of, but I managed to make it out of the space station and into a huge wide open area of space. I will say that I did feel a bit light in the stomach playing it as the VR was just so smooth. If VR doesn’t make you nauseous, then you will have a fantastic time with Detached.

Detached is looking to be released in Q1 2017. You can try the game in Early Access right now, but only in VR.
